PREPARE YOUR BODY FOR WINTER - Look and feel better by Spring.
     Avoid Dehydration: Drink lots of clean water! Remember, you lose twice as much water from your body during the winter by merely breathing the heated winter air in your house and at work. Drink at least 6 glasses of clean water per day to protect yourself from winter dehydration.
     Humidify your home and office: This will help to reduce water loss from your body.
     Be careful with Diuretics and "water pills": "Water pills" are used to help control body fluid in Hypertension, early heart failure, etc. and can worsen dehydration. Ask your doctor if you should reduce the dose of these medicines during the winter months.
     Protect Your Skin from Dehydration
Winter and wind can wreak havoc on your Lips and Skin. Use a lip moisturizer and opaque lipsticks to protect your lips. Avoid "licking" your lips, as this will often worsen the dryness. Use a moisturizer with UV protection for your skin, especially if skiing.
     Avoid Winter Depression: Get as much sunlight as you can during the short winter days. Lack of winter sunlight contributes to winter Depression. If you work indoors under fluorescent lights, make sure that your workplace has the type of lights that are "daylight rated".
     Avoid Vitamin Deficiencies: Vitamin C: Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and consider taking a Vitamin C supplement. I suggest a chewable form of vitamin C taken with meals.
Vitamin D: Sunlight plays an important role in Vitamin D regulation. Vitamin D is critical for maintaining strong bones, teeth. If you live in a northern climate where winter sunlight is limited, or if you are over age 70, you should discus with your doctor taking a daily vitamin D supplement.

PREVENTION - YOUR KEY TO A LONG & HEALTHY LIFE

Many of you have asked me what do you have to do to increase your chances of living a long and healthy life. Although there is some very exciting news on this subject in this Newsletter, there is, as yet, no magic bullet. Here are some general recommendations:
The American Academy of Anti-aging Medicine and other specialists in the field of Prevention have identified several important indicators of aging that should be followed by your physician or other health practitioner.
These include:
1. Tests for your Growth Hormone Levels (HGH or IGF level)
2. Tests for Circulating levels of other Vitamins and Hormones in the blood
3. Test to tell how well your Heart functions
4. Test of your Lung function
5. Tests for your Bone Health
6. Nerve Conduction tests - To tell how well your Nerves function.
7. Tests for Blood Circulation
8. Your percentage of Body Fat compared to your Lean Muscle
9. Tests of your Muscle Strength
10. Tests to see how quickly you can respond to a Stimulus (sound, etc)
11. Tests of your Balance, Coordi-nation and your Reaction time
12. Some basic Psychological tests
Age Related Screening Tests
The age-related screening recommendations given below are only general recommenda-tions. Your doctor may recommend more frequent screenings based on your own risk factors. For example, if you have a family history of breast cancer, colon cancer or other specified colon conditions, your doctor may recommend more frequent mammograms or colon cancer screenings.

EXCITING NEW TESTS TO TELL YOU YOUR BODY'S REAL AGE! You will soon be able to Measure your body's real age and learn how to grow younger!
     The "H-Scan", a machine that compares your "Chronological" age (your Real age in years) to your "Biological" age (how old your body actually "behaves"), is becoming increasingly popular in Germany.
     The manufacturers claim to be able to measure as many as 12 non-invasive Biomarkers of Aging in one sitting. Biomarkers of Aging.
     To locate a center near you, call our office or Email us at goodhealthnews@myhealthspan.com Share in the excitement of testing your body's real age and learn how to grow young again.
HEART HEALTH FOR WOMEN
HEART ATTACKS! Did you know that, as a woman, you stand a much greater risk of getting a heart attack than of getting breast cancer? That's a fact! Here are some things you ladies can do to protect yourselves from heart attacks:
  • Control your blood pressure: a resting blood pressure of 120/80 is considered normal.
  • Control your weight: Keep your weight within ten percent of the accepted weight range for your height. A better measure is your BMI or Body Mass Index (see the weight and BMI charts at: www.MyHealthSpan.com).
  • Control your Blood Fats: Your total Triglyceride level should be less than 150 and your HDL level (good blood fat) should be greater than 45.
  • Avoid Cigarette smoking: unless you have a great life insurance policy! If you drink, drink in moderation.
  • Reduce your Stress level: Stress is a killer! If you are a female executive, or work in a supervisory position, you must get plenty of regular exercise, practice yoga and other relaxation techniques to reduce your stress level.
  • Don't ignore Chest Pains: All Chest pains must be thoroughly evaluated, regardless of your age. Don't subscribe to the myth that "women don't get heart attacks".
  • Know your Family History: You are at greater risk if you have a family of heart attacks or heart disease. A personal history of Diabetes also increases your risk of heart disease.
ETERNAL YOUTH: Fact or Fiction?
You've heard all the talk about "turning back the clock" on your body. What are the facts? Is it really possible for modern medicine to help you get younger? To turn back your body's biological clock? Surprisingly enough, the answer seems to be Yes!
     Human Growth Hormone (HGH): The good news is that a growing body of medical research seems to indicate that you will soon be able to literally turn back the clock on the process of aging and delay and reverse many of the common signs and symptoms of aging. Much of this research is centered around the use of HGH.
     The bad news is that there is no single magic bullet. Although the research is still in its infancy, it appears that if you want to live a long and healthy life, you will still have to pay attention to "the basics" of your health care. This makes good sense. Here are some of the things that you must do if you want to reap the maximum benefit from this promising new area of medical research:
  • Be sure to keep up with the Age related Health Screens outlined earlier in this issue of Good Health News.
  • Start a supervised regimen of muscle strengthening exercises. Muscle strengthening exercises appear to stimulate the release of HGH
  • Get adequate sleep. HGH is released from your Pituitary Gland during periods of deep sleep.
Why all the excitement about HGH?
     There is an impressive body of scientific evidence that shows that HGH (Human Growth Hormone), a hormone that is produced by the Pituitary Gland in the brain, is a very important, if not the most important, factor in controlling the aging process. In normal humans, the production of HGH starts to taper off in the late teens to early twenties.
     Slows Aging: All of the symptoms and signs that we normally associate with the aging process become more pronounced as the HGH level continues to decline. What's more exciting, is the fact that scientist have shown that they can reverse many of the signs and symptoms of aging with the injection of synthetic Human HGH.
     Let me hasten to add that I am NOT suggesting that you all rush out to your doctors and try to obtain HGH injections! This would be unwise based on the available evidence and would cost you thousands of dollars per month. Before taking any supplements, you should always discus your particular situation with your doctor or health professional.
     As you would expect, research in this area is continuing at a feverish pace. Several researchers claim to have developed preparations that can be taken by mouth to stimulate HGH production in humans.
     Many of these preparations use combinations of naturally occurring Amino Acids. Others use substances that suppress Somatostatin, the naturally occurring hormone that appears to turn off your natural HGH production. Some manufacturers add small amounts of animal preparations of HGH to their formulas.
     I will review some of these preparations in future issues of Good Health News.
What gets better with this treatment?
Here are some of the signs and symptoms of aging which have been shown to improve with synthetic HGH injections:
Skin wrinkles and fine lines decrease;
Energy level is increased;
Vision is improved;
Sexual desire and sexual function are markedly improved;
Age spots, Visible veins, and Blemishes on the hands recede;
The Hair thickens and graying of the hair decreases;
The skin becomes less wrinkled around the eyes and mouth;
Easier Weight control, including loss of the thick waistlines and loss of "Cellulite";
Decrease of the Sagging and Drooping of the jaws that often accompanies aging;
Memory and Cognitive Function return;
Joints are more mobile and become more flexible.
In closing, let me stress again that this research is still in its infancy. There is no magic bullet as yet, but you should watch closely for future developments in this area. Be extremely careful in evaluating all the claims and counter-claims.

TARGET YOUR VITA-MINS & SUPPLE-MENTS: How to use them to protect your health
Who Should Take them? Yes, you should be taking a high quality multi-vitamin multi-mineral supplement as a part of your preventive health program! Top quality Nutritional Supplements are now called "Nutriceuticals". Most top quality supplements will cost you a little more and will not be found in your local drug store.
Which supplement should you Use? The best reference which I have been able to find for comparison of top quality Nutriceuticals is on the web at www.ConsumerLab.com . This is a trusted source that compares many well-known brands for ingredients, contam-inants and how well your vitamin dissolves.
What should a good Supplement contain?
100% or more of the recommended Daily Value for:
- Fat Soluble Vitamins (A, D, E, K).
- Water soluble Vitamins (B-6, B-12, C, Folic Acid, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin)
- Minerals (Iron, Zinc Copper, Chro-mium, Selenium, Iodine, Magnesium, Calcium and Potassium)

Will this regimen work for Everyone? No! Some medical conditions such as cancers, radiation, smoking, menstruation and old age, will cause the body to use increased amounts of certain nutritional supplements. You should consult your health professional for your specific condition.

DETOXIFY YOUR BODY IN 7 DAYS - Finally, a safe and effective "detoxification" program:
The best book that I have found on this subject is "7-Day Detox Miracle" by Peter Bennett, N.D., and Stephen Barrie, N.D. with Sara Faye. This is an excellent book to add to your Preventive Health Library. Please refer to Chapter 9 of this book for specific details and recipes.

For centuries, smart humans have understood that they need to cleanse their bodies of the "Toxins" which accumulate in their internal organs over time. These toxins usually came from pollutants in our food, air and water. Our ancestors used various fruit and vegetable combinations, Herbal preparations, Sweat-baths, Mineral Baths and the ingestion of naturally occurring oils and salts to cleanse their systems. Many of us remember our grandparents periodically taking Castor Oil, Epsom Salts and Senekot preparations.

In today's world, we ingest more Pesticides, Dyes, Industrial Toxins, Antibiotics and Heavy Metals in our food than our parents could ever have imagined.

The air in our homes and work places is polluted with Molds, Mildew, Gasoline vapors and Industrial Pollutants. Our water is polluted with waste from farms and factories. Our food is polluted with Hormones, Dyes, and excess Sugars.

These pollutants can affect every organ system of the body! The safe removal of these harmful and unwanted pollutants from the body is often referred to as "detoxification".

Many health practitioners agree that it is a good idea to include a safe, natural "detoxification" program in your health regimen from time to time.

Safety Guidelines for Detoxification:
Here are some general guidelines to follow on any detoxification regimen:

Check with your doctor: Always check with your doctor or health professional before starting any new health program.
Drink Pure Water: Drink 6 or more glasses of pure spring water every day (distilled or filtered water). You may flavor your water with fresh fruit juice.

Use Organic fruits and vegetables: Fresh, organic fruit juice contains hundreds of times more anti-oxidants than stored fruit juice. On the days when you are not fasting, you can benefit from using "Fruit Smoothies" and "Rice Protein" shakes for "Snacks"

Use top quality Nutritional Supplements: Always use a high quality multi-vitamin, multi-mineral supplement and always take your supplements with meals.

Use Brown Rice: Use brown rather than white rice for all rice recipes. Rice protein is an excellent "snack" for detox regimens.
Use Beets as a daily snack: Beets contain Betaine, which helps to rid the body of Homocysteine, a dangerous substance that damages the arteries.

Exercise: You should get at least one hour of Exercise every day. You need to sweat.

Get adequate Sleep: You should get 6 to 7 hours of sleep per night.

Avoid caffeine: Avoid caffeine in all food and drinks. Eat only when you are hungry.

Relax your mind: Detoxify your mind at night with yoga, reading, etc. Avoid TV at night to reduce excitement.

Common Problems with Detox programs: Always check with your doctor or health professional if you have chronic diseases or are on medications. Here are some things you should look out for during your detox program:
  • Dizziness may occur due to low blood sugar. Increase your fluids and rice protein
  • Nausea may occur and can often be relieved by drinking lemon water
  • Constipation can be relieved with flax-seed powder
  • Rapid Weight Loss can be avoided or reversed by increasing olive oil or flaxseed oil in the diet.
  • Diarrhea may occur and can be relieved by increasing rice protein in the diet.
  • Headaches, Insomnia, Excess Hunger, Bloating and Irritability are usually temporary if they occur. These symptoms can usually be relieved by making adjustments in the intake of fiber, total calories and protein.
YOUR SEXUAL HEALTH
New help for Failing sexual function and/or performance:

Two key brain hormones seem to play very important roles in controlling your sexual function and your sexual performance.
Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is known to greatly improve your sexual function. A second hormone, Somatostatin, is thought to decrease your sexual function because it interferes with HGH secretion.
You will be pleased to know that scientists are now developing medicines that can be used to dramatically improve your sexual function and performance.
     These medicines work by increasing your body's production of HGH and/or decreasing your body's production of Somatostatin. They can be taken by mouth. Watch Good Health News for future developments in this area.

ANTHRAX: KNOW THE FACTS
(From our Infectious Disease Desk)
Anthrax is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium with the scientific name of Bacillus anthracis; it is not a virus. Anthrax is usually a disease of hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats, but is can cause serious disease in humans. Symptoms appear about seven days after contact. There are three major forms of the anthrax disease: cutaneous (skin), intestinal (gut), and inhalation (lungs).
     Cutaneous anthrax starts as a boil on the skin and develops into an ulcer with a black scab. Intestinal anthrax results from eating poorly cooked infected meat and causes inflammation of the intestinal tract. This results in pain, vomiting of blood, and severe diarrhea. Inhalation anthrax is the most serious form of the disease, and may be lethal in 75% of cases. It is caused when large number of bacteria, in the form of spores, is inhaled from the soil, infected animal skins or contaminated surfaces. The first symptoms resemble a cold, and then progresses to difficulty in breathing, fever, and shock.

     Anthrax is not known to be transmitted from person to person, and the infection can be prevented or treated with antibiotics. The disease can be treated with Penicillin and Doxycycline. Ciprofloxacin, better known as Cipro® is also effective. Cipro is not the drug of choice because it is costly, and its overuse may lead to antibiotic resistance in other bacterial infections. The risk of acquiring anthrax remains extremely small, although the very old or persons with weakened resistance may be more susceptible. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) do not recommend the purchase of gas masks and the hoarding of antibiotics to protect against anthrax. Gas Masks must be individually fitted and may give a false sense of protection.
