Where lead exposure still comes from today.

Lead is a metal that can build up in the body over time. Measuring it helps show whether you've had recent exposure from sources like old paint, older plumbing, or certain imported products.

Lead levels in Canada have dropped, and some sources remain.

Average blood lead levels in Canada have fallen since 2007, and most exposure today comes through food and drinking water. Homes built before 1960 probably have lead-based paint, and some built up to 1990 may too. Older plumbing may contain lead pipes or solder.

Other sources include some imported ceramic dishes, spices, cosmetics, and traditional remedies, as well as wild game shot with lead ammunition. A blood lead result mainly reflects the past few weeks. In adults, most of the body's lead is stored in bone, which releases it slowly.

Questions

What does a higher lead result mean?

It usually points to recent or ongoing exposure. Your clinician will ask about your home's age, your water, work, hobbies, and any imported products or remedies you use, and may look at your blood count and kidney results too.

How can I lower my exposure?

Health Canada suggests letting your tap run until the water is cold before drinking it, keeping household dust down, and not using glazed dishes bought outside Canada for food or drinks. It also recommends non-lead ammunition when hunting for food.
