Platelet size, read alongside platelet count.

MPV is the average size of your platelets, the cell fragments that help your blood clot. Newly made platelets tend to be larger, so MPV may give a rough sense of how actively your bone marrow is producing them.

MPV says little on its own.

MPV is most useful next to your platelet count. In healthy people the two tend to move in opposite directions, which keeps total platelet mass fairly steady. A low count with a high MPV can suggest platelets are being used up and replaced quickly, while a low count with a low MPV can point toward lower production.

Research has linked MPV with heart disease, diabetes, and inflammatory conditions, though some conditions raise it and others lower it. Its use in everyday care is still limited.

Questions

Why might MPV differ between labs?

MPV depends on the analyzer used and on how the sample is handled. Platelets can swell the longer blood sits in the collection tube, which raises MPV. That's one reason MPV is most useful when compared over time at the same lab.

What else can affect MPV?

Age, sex, genetics, and smoking are linked with differences in MPV, and some studies link birth control pills with higher values. A clinician reads your result in light of these factors, your platelet count, and your health history.
