Compare membershipsBlood pressure matters for your heart and your brain.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against your artery walls. High blood pressure usually causes no symptoms, and it's the leading risk factor for stroke and a major risk factor for heart disease.
A reading has two numbers, one for each phase of a heartbeat.
The top number (systolic) is the pressure when your heart beats. The bottom number (diastolic) is the pressure when your heart relaxes between beats. Your phlebotomist measures blood pressure during at-home visits only, so it isn't part of a lab walk-in draw.
Blood pressure shifts with caffeine, stress, activity, and even talking, so one reading is a snapshot. Hypertension Canada notes that readings taken outside the clinic, such as home monitoring over a week, are useful to confirm high blood pressure.
One reading is a snapshot. A pattern of readings tells the story.
Questions
What does a high reading mean?
A single high reading doesn't confirm high blood pressure. Nerves, a recent coffee, or rushing can push it up. If your reading is high, a clinician may suggest repeat readings, often at home over a week, to see your usual level.
How can I get an accurate reading?
Avoid caffeine and smoking for 30 minutes beforehand, empty your bladder, and sit quietly for five minutes with your back supported, feet flat, and arm resting at heart level. Try not to talk during the reading.
